Shrapnel Boys: Life on the Home Front Museum Trail

This May Half Term, join us for the Shrapnel Boys: Life on the Home Front museum trail, organised by Kids in Museums and Usborne. Inspired by the forthcoming novel Shrapnel Boys by award-winning author Jenny Pearson, this national family trail explores the courage and friendship of children living through the Second World War.

Follow the story of Ronnie Smith, a boy living in London during wartime 1939. While he’s scared of the night bombs, he’s also excited to race friends to collect shrapnel each morning. But Ronnie soon discovers the battles aren’t only outside – they’re at home and school too, as his little brother gets involved in a secret and dangerous job. Ronnie’s mission to help him leads to surprising secrets that could change the course of the war.

Pick up a free activity sheet at any Birmingham Museums Trust site to explore what life was like for children on the home front. Search for hidden objects around the museum, complete the spotter trail, and receive a free sticker! Kids can also design their own VE Day bunting. The winning design will receive a signed copy of Shrapnel Boys by Jenny Pearson and a National Art Pass (plus kids) from Art Fund — giving free entry to hundreds of museums, galleries, and historic houses across the UK, plus 50% off major exhibitions for one adult and children under 16.

A fantastic way to learn, create, and celebrate history this half term!
